3 Ways to Manage ASWB Exam Anxiety

Anxiety can present itself in all kinds of settings, driving, social interactions, job interviews, down to the simplest task. One of the most common places people begin to feel that anxious, doubtful feeling creeping up is while taking tests. Especially when it’s the ticket to jumping into your career. The ASWB licensure exam is no different than any other; the best way to manage your testing anxiety is all about how you prepare!

  1. Talk to Your Supervisor

A quality supervisor is the best investment you can make during your journey to licensure. Having someone that won’t just cash your check and sign your forms but guide you through the entire process is beyond valuable. Your supervisor is one of your best tools while preparing for the ASWB because they’ve taken it before! If you have any questions about the exam or how to prepare, use your network! Lean on those that can give you firsthand advice and calm some of those pre-test jitters.

  1. Make Sure You’re Studying Effectively

Most people don’t realize their learning styles can change over time. Whether visual, auditory, or kinesthetic, just because it worked well in the past doesn’t mean it’s the best option moving forward. Utilize all avenues of learning when you begin studying for the exam. If you have confidence in the way, you study, you’ll have confidence in what you study! Some common study methods are:

The SQ3R method

This method begins with Survey. Surveying is actively reading through your notes, focusing on key information, especially charts, statistics, pictures, etc. Next, forms questions about content you might be unfamiliar with or need to review the most. Next is re-reading, searching for the answers to the questions you formulated. After, recite a summary of the content you just read. Practice recalling the information or teaching it to someone else. Finally, review all the information you covered by quizzing yourself, recording audio notes, and making interactive study games, flashcards, and acronyms. These will help combat some of that test-day brain fog.

The Pomodoro Technique

This technique works for those that struggle with time management. It suggests you break your work into 25-minute blocks with 5-minute breaks in between. Reward yourself with a longer break, 15-30 minutes, after four consecutive blocks.

Remember, confidence is competence!
